Seventh Day of U.S.-Israel War Sees Surge in Strikes and Regional Spillover

The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has entered its seventh day on March 6, 2026, with relentless aerial bombardments continuing to reshape the conflict amid escalating regional involvement and no signs of imminent de-escalation. Joint operations, codenamed Operation Epic Fury by the United States and Operation Roaring Lion by Israel, began on February 28 with preemptive strikes targeting Iranian leadership, air defenses, ballistic missile capabilities, nuclear-related sites, and military infrastructure across cities including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, and others. A pivotal early development was the confirmed assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which triggered the formation of an Interim Leadership Council and plunged Iran's government into disarray.

U.S. and Israeli forces have maintained air superiority, conducting thousands of strikes that have reportedly destroyed or severely degraded hundreds of ballistic missile launchers, radar systems, naval vessels—including the sinking of the IRIS Dena and a large Iranian drone carrier by a U.S. submarine—and key command centers. Recent waves have focused on missile production facilities, defense industries, and regime infrastructure in Tehran, with massive explosions reported in the capital overnight and plumes of smoke visible across the city. Iranian missile and drone retaliations against Israel have significantly declined, dropping by roughly 90% for missiles and 83% for drones according to U.S. assessments, while Israeli strikes have also expanded to Hezbollah targets in Beirut's southern suburbs following renewed cross-border attacks.

Iran has mounted widespread counterstrikes, launching ballistic missiles and drones targeting Israel—including hits near Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Ben Gurion Airport—as well as U.S. military bases and allies across the Gulf. These have struck sites in Saudi Arabia (with drones intercepted near Riyadh), Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE (causing damage and civilian casualties in Abu Dhabi and Dubai), and for the first time, Azerbaijan (a drone attack on Nakhchivan airport injuring civilians). Iran has also attacked shipping, including a U.S.-owned tanker, and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has nearly halted, driving sharp oil price spikes and global economic concerns. Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani, have declared forces are prepared and "waiting" for any potential U.S. ground invasion, vowing intensified and broader attacks to disrupt the regional economy, with no requests for ceasefire.

Casualty figures continue to rise, with Iran's death toll from U.S.-Israeli strikes reaching at least 1,332, including civilians in residential areas, near universities, and other non-military sites in Tehran and beyond. U.S. forces have reported losses, including at least six service members killed in Iranian drone and missile attacks on bases in Kuwait and elsewhere. No major radiological incidents have occurred despite strikes near nuclear facilities like Natanz, though damage to covert sites has been confirmed. The conflict has spilled into Lebanon with intensified Israeli operations against Hezbollah, and European nations have deployed assets while NATO defenses intercepted an Iranian missile over Turkish airspace.

Politically, President Donald Trump has asserted influence over Iran's post-Khamenei leadership, rejecting certain successors and encouraging Iranian Kurdish forces to act offensively while signaling indefinite U.S. munitions support and a surge in operations. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has emphasized total air dominance and lethal precision in ongoing strikes. Congress has blocked efforts to limit war powers, and Gulf allies grapple with depleting interceptor stocks amid sustained barrages. Analysts warn of risks for a prolonged war of attrition, potential regime change efforts from within, and broader regional or global escalation, as Iran insists it will not surrender or negotiate under duress while the U.S. and Israel describe the campaign as essential to neutralizing long-term threats.
